What’s the difference between décade and décennie?
Although the words décennie and décade are very similar, they actually have different meanings; one refers to a period of ten years and the other to a period of ten days.

décade
The French noun décade is a false friend for English speakers: although it looks like the English word decade, in French une décade is a period of ten days.
- Example:
- Le calendrier républicain, adopté en 1793, avait divisé les mois en décades.The republican calendar, adopted in 1793, had divided the months into ten-day periods.
Décade can also refer to a part of a work that is composed of ten books.
- Example:
- L’Histoire Romaine de Tite-Live est divisée en décades.The Roman history of Titus Livius is divided into ten books.
décennie
Une décennie is the French word for decade (period of ten years).
- Example:
- Le secteur des nouvelles technologies a évolué à une vitesse impressionnante au cours de la dernière décennie.The new technology sector has evolved at an impressive pace over the course of the last decade.
