What are paronyms in French?

In French, paronyms (les paronymes) are words that are extremely similar to one another, but are not actually true homonyms. They are not pronounced or written in the same way, however they resemble each other so closely it is easy to mix them up: sometimes there is only one letter difference between two paronyms! To help you avoid getting mixed up, we’ve created a list of the most common paronyms in French grammar.

compréhensible

understandable

Example:
Anne-Lise a envie de changer de poste, et c’est bien compréhensible - ces collègues sont insupportables !Anne-Lise wants to change her job, it’s understandable — her colleagues are unbearable!

compréhensif

understanding

Example:
Mes parents sont très compréhensifs, ils ne me font presque jamais de reproches.My parents are very understanding, they hardly ever tell me off.

conjecture

conjecture, speculation

Example:
En l’absence de preuves concrètes, les enquêteurs en sont réduits à des conjectures.In the absence of concrete proof, the investigators are left to speculate.

conjoncture

climate (economic, political, etc.), situation

Example:
Cette entreprise a su tirer parti de la conjoncture actuelle.This company has been able to take advantage of the current climate.

décerner

to award (a prize)

Example:

éminent

Example:

imminent

imminent, about to happen

Example:
Veuillez monter dans le train, le départ est imminent.Please board the train, departure is imminent.

emmener

to take someone from one place to another (emphasis on the point of departure)
to take something with you

Example:
Viens, je t’emmène au bout du monde.Come on, I’ll take you to the end of the world.

amener

to drive someone somewhere, to give someone a lift/ride (emphasis on the destination)
to bring something with you

Example:
Tous les matins, Magalie amène sa fille à l’école.Every morning, Magalie drives her daughter to school.

éruption

(volcanic) eruption

Example:
Les habitants du village ont dû avoir bien peur lorsque le volcan est entré en éruption.The residents of the village must have been afraid when the volcano started to erupt.

a sudden entrance, used when someone bursts into a room

evoke, bring up, remind someone of something

invoquer

to call on, to appeal to

Example:

importun

inopportune, inappropriate, unwelcome

Example:
Nous n’attendions pas la venue de ce visiteur importun.We weren‘t expecting the arrival of this unwelcome visitor.

opportun

inclinaison
