The French verbs emprunter and prêter are often confused by French learners. They function in the same way as the English verbs borrow and lend. Read on to learn which is which, then put your knowledge to the test in the exercises.
Example
– Pauline, est-ce que je peux t’emprunter dix euros ?
– D’accord, je te prête dix euros. Mais il faut que tu me les rendes la semaine prochaine.
emprunter
Emprunter quelque chose à quelqu’un means to borrow something from someone. When using emprunter, the subject is receiving something.
- Examples:
- J’ai emprunté trois nouveaux livres à la bibliothèque.I borrowed three new books from the library.
- Jérôme et Camille ont emprunté une grosse somme d’argent pour acheter leur appartement.Jérôme and Camille borrowed a large sum of money to buy their apartment.
- Cédric, je peux t’emprunter ton vélo pour aller au lac avec mes amies ce soir ?Cédric, can I borrow your bike to go to the lake with my friends tonight?
prêter
Prêter quelque chose à quelqu’un means to lend something to someone. With prêter, the subject is giving something, not receiving.
- Examples:
- Je ne retrouve plus ce DVD, je dois l’avoir prêté à quelqu’un.I can’t find this DVD any more, I must have lent it to someone.
- Le frère de Bertrand lui a prêté sa planche à voile pour le week-end.Bertrand’s brother lent him his windsurfing board for the weekend.
- Est-ce que tu pourrais me prêter un stylo ?Could you lend me a pen?
