What’s the difference between magasin and magazine?

Although the nouns magasin and magazine look almost identical, they actually have totally different meanings. Read on to learn the difference between magasin and magazine, then put your knowledge to the test in the exercises.

Example

Virginie va dans un magasin pour s’acheter une raquette de tennis.

Elle demande au vendeur : « Est-ce que vous avez aussi des magazines de sport pour que je puisse améliorer ma technique de jeu ? »

magasin

Magasin is the French word for shop.

Examples:
Le magasin est fermé le dimanche.The shop is closed on Sunday.
Il y a un nouveau magasin de vêtements sur l’avenue Beaumarchais.There’s a new clothes shop on the avenue Beaumarchais.

magazine

Magazine is the French word for a magazine or a publication.

Examples:
Je lis souvent des magazines scientifiques.I often read scientific magazines.
Christine s’est acheté un magazine avant de prendre le train.Christine bought herself a magazine before getting on the train.
