Although they look very similar, puis and depuis have neither the same grammatical function, nor the same meaning. One is an adverb and one is a preposition. Read on to learn which is which, then put your knowledge to the test in the exercises.
Example
Madame Jonquille n’a pas vu sa meilleure amie depuis deux mois. Aujourd’hui, elles ont rendez-vous dans leur café habituel pour se raconter tout ce qui s’est passé dans leur vie depuis la dernière fois.
Madame Jonquille enfile sa veste, puis elle prend son sac avant de sortir de chez elle.
puis
Puis is an adverb similar to the English word then. It introduces a subsequent action and indicates the order of events in a narrative.
It is followed by a clause (subject - verb - object) or a noun.
- Examples:
- Monsieur Granget a mis de l’ordre dans ses dossiers, puis il a quitté le bureau.Monsieur Granget put his files in order, then he left the office.
- Gilles et Magalie rangèrent leurs valises dans le coffre, puis ils se mirent en route.Gilles and Magalie put their suitcases in the boot, then set off.
- J’ai pris l’avion, puis le train.I took a flight, then the train.
depuis
Depuis is a preposition similar to the English words for and since. It indicates the duration of an action that began in the past and continues up to the moment of speaking.
It is almost always followed by a time or place indicator. Depuis can also be followed by a noun.
- Examples:
- Léa travaille à l’agence depuis cinq ans.Léa has been working at the agency for five years.
- Nous roulons à cette vitesse depuis Marseille.We’ve been driving at this speed since Marseille.
- Je n’ai pas revu Daniel depuis notre dispute.I haven’t seen Daniel since our fight.
