The French adjectives mieux and meilleur are easy to mix up. The former is the comparative of bien and the latter is the comparative of bon. It’s therefore important to know the difference between bon and bien to avoid getting confused! Read on to learn when to use mieux and when to use meilleur, then test yourself in the exercises.

Comme il s’entraîne tous les jours, Félix est devenu meilleur au foot.
Il joue mieux qu’avant.
Il s’est aussi acheté de nouvelles chaussures. Elles sont meilleures que les précédentes et il peut mieux courir.
mieux
Mieux is the comparative form of bien. It is most often an adverb: it describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
- Examples:
- Félix joue mieux au foot qu’avant.Félix plays football better than before.

- —Tu viens au cinéma avec nous ?Are you coming to the cinema with us?
—Non merci, j’aime mieux rester à la maison et terminer mon livre.No, thanks. I’d rather stay home and finish my book. -
Mieux describes the verb aimer
Mieux can also be used as an adjective with the verb être to express a moral or intellectual judgement, often about something more abstract.
- Examples:
- L’entraîneur de Félix lui dit : « Continue comme ça, c’est beaucoup mieux ! »Felix’s trainer says to him: “Keep going! That’s much better!
- Le nouveau livre de Houellebecq est mieux que le précédent.Houellebecq’s new book is better than his previous one.
meilleur
Meilleur is the comparative form of bon. It is an adjective: it describes a noun and agrees in terms of gender and number.
- Examples:
- Félix est devenu meilleur au foot.Félix has got better at football.
Meilleur describes the proper noun Félix (masculine singular)
- Ses chaussures sont meilleures que les précédentes.His shoes are better than his previous ones.
Meilleures describes the noun chaussures (feminine plural)
We use meilleur as an adjective to express a sensory judgement or evaluation about something concrete (e.g., food, temperature, etc.).
- Example:
- Le gâteau de Paul était meilleur que celui de Madeleine.Paul’s cake is better than Madeleine’s.
